Kids in the Kitchen

Getting Kids in the kitchen and interested in healthy food let alone food preparation and cooking can be a chore, but the knowledge and hands on experience gained by involving children in the kitchen can be an invaluable life skill as well a surprising amount of fun.

Children are naturally curious and given the right environment will enjoy the chance to become involved. The trick is to make the kitchen a fun place to spend your time; if they can see you enjoying yourself cooking they will be more likely to get involved. Also try to avoid mentioning the dreaded “healthy” word, and focus on discussing the colours, textures and flavours of the meal you are making together.

Young kids are natural students and usually willing to give new experiences a go, try involving them in the shopping process as well and put them in charge of picking out a few vegetables for the evening meal. This experience creates a feeling of ownership and personal investment when it comes to the kitchen and foods maybe less likely to taste “gross” as a result.
